TIMES MALANG, JAKARTA – Tucked away in the heart of Taliabu Island, Indonesia, lies a natural wonder that beckons explorers and nature enthusiasts alike. Telaga Likitobi, a picturesque lagoon, connects the charming villages of Holbota and Kawalo.

The word Telaga as in Telaga Likitobi is an Indonesian word that translates to lake or lagoon in English. In Indonesia, a telaga typically refers to a small lake or pond.

Telaga Likitobi's name carries a unique history. Originally known as Aketobi, legend has it that it was bestowed by guests from the Sultanate of Ternate during their visit to Kawalo. Over time, the name evolved into Likitobi, which translates to "inlet bay," a fitting description of this enchanting lagoon.

Many regions in the country are home to beautiful lakes or "telagas," which can vary in size and are often surrounded by lush vegetation, making them popular destinations for both tourists and locals seeking tranquility and natural beauty. Spanning nearly 7 kilometers in length and boasting a width of 2 kilometers, Likitobi promises a tranquil escape from the bustling world.

To truly immerse yourself in the splendor of Telaga Likitobi, one must embark on a boat or raft adventure. While rowing remains an option, it's a time-consuming and strenuous endeavor that hardly does justice to this natural marvel. Instead, let the soothing hum of a motorized vessel transport you through the lagoon's captivating beauty.

Natural Attractions

Within Telaga Likitobi's crystal-clear waters lie two hidden treasures – Pulau Nusa Raden and Pulau Nusa Jaha. These islands enhance the lagoon's allure, offering a glimpse into untouched paradises that await exploration.

Regrettably, not all residents of Taliabu Island have had the privilege of witnessing Telaga Likitobi's wonder. The island's vast expanse and partially connected road infrastructure pose challenges to accessibility. However, as efforts to improve infrastructure continue, the hope remains that more people can experience this natural marvel.

Local Livelihoods and a Rich Ecosystem

Beyond its appeal as a tourist destination, Telaga Likitobi plays a pivotal role in the lives of the local population. Fishermen cast their nets, crabbers search for treasures, and squid hunters seek their elusive prey. Additionally, residents provide raft transportation services, allowing fellow islanders to cross the lagoon.

When the waves surge during the six-month season, Telaga Likitobi becomes the primary source of income for many. The lagoon teems with various fish, crabs, and even squid or cuttlefish, forming a diverse ecosystem that supports both tourism and the local economy.

Telaga Likitobi is more than just a lagoon; it's a testament to nature's splendor and the resilience of the local community. As infrastructure improves and accessibility grows, this hidden gem is poised to become a must-visit destination for travelers seeking unspoiled beauty and unique cultural experiences in Taliabu Island. Explore Telaga Likitobi and immerse yourself in its enchanting world—a world waiting to be discovered.
