TIMES MALANG, JAKARTA – In the midst of nature's tranquility, Wisata Kanal Sungai Suko-Suko or the Suko-suko Canal offers a serene escape in the heart of Tegalboto. With its pristine river and lush surroundings, it's a place where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of nature while enjoying a breathtaking sunset.

The highlight of this destination is a leisurely journey along a 100-meter canal. You can drift along the canal in two provided rubber boats, creating a memorable experience as you soak in the picturesque views. The clean river and verdant atmosphere make it an ideal spot for appreciating nature's wonders.

But this isn't just any tourist spot; it's a testament to community collaboration and the dedication of local students to improve their region's economy. Students from the Tegalboto campus have been actively involved in boosting the local economy by promoting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM).

Yasmine Cahya Syifa, the Head of the Student Organization Capacity Strengthening Program (PPK Ormawa) at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) of the University of Jember (UNEJ), highlights the abundant potential of the local community. She envisions this potential being harnessed for development.

Numerous gazebos have been set up at the location, serving as selling points for local UMKMs. By fostering both tourism and UMKMs, it is hoped that the economic well-being of the community will significantly improve.

The innovative approach of the UNEJ students has been warmly welcomed by the Head of Sukorejo Village, Luluk Novita. She expressed her delight at the students' involvement in securing permits for the management of the canal's tourist activities.

"This place used to be a hangout spot for young people and even a site for illegal racing. But now, it has transformed into an attractive tourist destination that can support local UMKMs," said Luluk.

Additionally, Luluk has plans to organize a car-free day at the tourist site every Sunday. This initiative aims to provide UMKMs from Sukorejo Village with the opportunity to showcase and sell their products.

"We will completely close the road for car-free day, but there will still be alternate routes," Luluk explained.

For now, Luluk has decided to offer free entry to the tourist destination. She believes that every little bit helps in a village where one or two thousand rupiahs can make a significant difference. However, the local government will continue to monitor the development of the tourist site. If it proves successful and beneficial, there is the possibility of allocating village funds to support it in the future.

As Wisata Kanal Sungai Suko-Suko continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and the role of students in shaping the future of their region. It's not just a place to enjoy the beauty of nature but also a symbol of progress and collaboration within the community. (*)
